Harris Corporation Acquires Patriot Technologies

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, reportedly has acquired Patriot Technologies, LLC, a privately held company, expanding its position as a provider of integrated, interoperable healthcare information technology solutions for the federal government market.

Patriot (News - Alert) is a provider of Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare IT, imaging and enterprise software solutions.

Harris is involved in federal healthcare information systems integration, imaging and digital content management solutions supporting the Department of Defense and Department of Health and Human Services Federal Health Architecture.

Officials at Harris said that the acquisition would further extend the company’s presence in the rapidly expanding $3.4 billion federal government healthcare IT market.

The company officials said that the move positions the company to provide comprehensive interoperability solutions that address the national priority of VA and Military Health System enterprise integration.

“Patriot's VA credentials, relationships and healthcare IT expertise are strong additions to our federal healthcare solutions initiatives,” said Howard L. Lance, chairman, president and CEO of Harris, in a statement.

Lance said that with this acquisition, Harris is well-positioned for a lead role in VA healthcare information technology and broader federal healthcare integration.

Patriot will become part of the Harris Healthcare Solutions business unit, led by Jim Traficant, vice president.

“Patriot is highly regarded at the VA for their technical excellence, mission expertise and exceptional customer support,” said Jim Traficant.

Traficant said that joining forces positions Harris for a lead role supporting joint VA and DoD priorities of integrated care and benefits delivery.

Earlier this month, Harris Corporation had announced the award of the U.S. Southern Command HQ relocation program in Miami.

Under the $37 million ITES-2S Task Order, USSOUTHCOM personnel will move to a new headquarters complex beginning Oct. 1, 2010. The Task Order will extend over 20 months – with additional optional tasks in excess of $18 million.

The Harris team – comprised of Harris IT Services, HP, IBM and other members – is responsible for the communications systems migration and consolidation of nine USSOUTHCOM buildings into a new facility.
