Healthcare Technology and News: MindTree Launches Bluetooth Health Device on Android Platform

MindTree Ltd., a global IT solutions company and a provider of Bluetooth Intellectual Property solutions, reportedly announced the launch of its Bluetooth health device solution on the Android platform.

The new solution can provide seamless interoperability among personal healthcare devices enabling individuals to connect with their healthcare providers in real-time. The device was demonstrated on the Google G1 Android Phone at the Continua Health Alliance Fall Summit held in Boston, MindTree sources said.

The Continua device solution encompasses MindTree’s qualified Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR stack with eL2CAP, Multi-Channel Adaptation Protocol and Health Device Profile integrated with IEEE – 11073 layers ported onto the Android platform on a Google G1 developer phone.

The health device solution on Google G1 Android Phone’s interoperability with the Continua-Certified pulse oximeter from Nonin Medical was demonstrated successfully. The pulse oximeter collected oxygen saturation levels and heart beat readings, which were transferred wirelessly over the Bluetooth to the G1 mobile phone which displays the readings. These can be stored for future reference or uploaded on the Internet to an Electronic Health Record or HER, company sources said.

The device is most suitable for present lifestyles with less motivation for fitness and weight management, more cardiac disease incidences and a growing aged population. The increase in healthcare costs and the growing number of people who require medical attention makes it necessary to have a system where people can seamlessly connect to healthcare providers enhancing interoperability among health devices.

“Continua Health Alliance is encouraged by the launch of MindTree’s implementation of the Continua Version One Bluetooth device interface,” said Continua Health Alliance president and chairman of the board of directors, Rick Cnossen. “The MindTree technology will foster and accelerate the development of Continua standards-based mobile solutions available to consumers.”

MindTree president and CEO, R&D services Vinod Deshmukh said that the new solution further enhances the company’s achievement in Bluetooth technology. With an increase in Bluetooth applications encompassing new markets, the company plans to invest in building the next generation of Bluetooth-based solutions to meet market demands, he noted.

MindTree’s Bluetooth stack and profiles are 2.1+EDR qualified and are suitable for multiple products ensuring interoperability and robustness with products of companies like NEC Corporation, GN Netcom and Logitech. Headsets, handsets and automotive infotainment platforms are some of the products.
